OBESITY IS A SERIOUS HEALTH RISK

If your Body Mass Index is over 30 it's time to take action because obesity is more than a cosmetic problem, it's a serious health risk. Obesity is a disease that involves having enough excess body fat to harm your health. Obesity is defined as morbid obesity (also called severe obesity) when the BMI is 40 or greater. If things get this serious the excess weight puts your life at risk because it is almost always accompanied by a large number of disorders – known as co-morbidities – that have an adverse impact on both health and quality of life, and at the sme time shorten life expectancy.

Since obesity is a chronic disease, its symptoms develop only gradually. Obesity makes your everyday life difficult too – it causess painful aches in your joints and your back, breathlessness and skin problems.

Left untreated, obesity tends to become morbid and lead to other life-threatening conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, sleep apnoea, cancer.

Perhaps this is all too familiar to you.

YOU CAN BEAT OBESITY

Yes, obesity can be treated. But it involves more than just swallowing a pill or sticking to a diet. It needs a multi-disciplinary assessment that sees several different specialists working together: dietician, endocrinologist, psychologist, internist, cardiologist, family doctors, bariatric surgeon.

TREATMENTS ARE TAILORED TO MEET THE NEEDS OF EACH INDIVIDUAL CASE:

  • psychological support
  • diet and behavioural therapy
  • pharmacotherapy
  • obesity surgery

If you are morbidly obese and have tried other treatments without success, you might explore the obesity surgery option with a medical team. Surgery, combined with behavioural modification, is currently the ony proven method of achieving long-term weight loss for the morbidly obese.

OBESITY SURGERY, A SOLUTION WORTH CONSIDERING

You are eligible for obesity surgery if:

  • your BMI is 35 or above
  • your BMI is 30 or above and you have obesity-related health conditions (co-morbidities).

Our multi-disciplinary team (a group of physicians specialized in morbid obesity) will evaluate the best solution in your own particular case. And even after the operation, you will continue to be periodically monitored at the obesity surgery centre that performed the surgery. The operation, though, is just the first step in a major lifestyle change.
